Оксид магния используется в производстве огнеупорных материалов, цементов, при переработке нефтепродуктов, в качестве наполнителя при производстве резины. Сверхлегкий оксид магния используется в качестве очень мелкого абразива для обработки поверхностей, особенно в электронной промышленности. В медицине это связано с повышенной кислотностью желудочного сока, так как она вызывает избыточное содержание соляной кислоты. Жечную магнезию принимают также при случайном попадании кислоты в желудок. Е530 зарегистрирован в пищевой промышленности как пищевая эволюция. Это абсолютный отражатель – вещество, коэффициент отражения которого равен величине в широкой спектральной полосе. Его можно использовать в качестве доступного стандарта для белого цвета.
